Solar powered lights have become very popular
within the last decade as fossil fuels have become more expensive.
Solar lights are an obvious and more affordable “off-grid” solution
in comparison to pricey solar panels for your home.
In general, solar lights have a lot of advantages such as an absence
of power plugs and the simplicity of installation. But are solar
powered lights good enough to replace your readily available
electrical lights outside your house? Read to find out!

and photographed by us to show you how they work. We hope these

What You Need to Know About Solar Lights
SOLAR MOTION SENSOR LIGHTS
Solar
Motion Sensor Lights have some obvious benefits as any other
solar light: easy installation, LED light which will
last a lifetime… In addition, solar
motion lights can be placed anywhere under the roof of your
house and not necessarily in a sunny spot, as other solar lights
are required to be placed. The actual solar cell in these
lights is designed as a separate unit and connected to the lights
by a wire. So, only the solar cell box itself has to be placed under
direct sunlight in order to collect the free energy into batteries.
The solar motion sensor light will start working only when
it gets dark. Once motion is detected, the light turns on for only
a few seconds at a time (between 5 and 30 seconds, as determined
with a dial on each light unit), which allows it to store power
for a much longer time without daily charging. Therefore, you do
not need to have your panel under direct sun everyday. Solar
motion sensor lights work perfectly in northern states
where sunlight is less abundant than in southern parts of
the country.
SOLAR
WALL MOUNTED LIGHTS
Most wall
mounted solar lights on the market are designed with
1 or 2 LEDs and are not as bright as regular electric lights would
be.
One of the brightest solar wall mounted lights
on the market that we found was the stainless steel wall
mounted light which we will review on this page.
This wall mounted solar light has an
appealing contemporary design, allowing it to be placed on a wall
as well as above your house or garden steps. The 1 LED light is
much brighter than we had expected. The brightness is created by
the design of the light itself concentrating and directing the light
into one area on a wall. It does make a big difference when you
place two of the lights next to each other as well.

SOLAR POWERED ADDRESSES
More and more solar
powered home addresses are appearing around our neighborhoods.
What a great idea! What can we find here? Solar powered rocks,
solar powered mailboxes, solar powered addresses...
We would recommend
to stay away from the solar powered plastic box on the
market that has illuminated address numbers from inside the
unit. The thin film of the solar cell on the face of the unit
became warped after a day of being exposed to the summer sun.
This is not something you would want to happen to a product
that is supposed to be under the sun all day!
SOLAR SPOT LIGHTS
As with any solar
lights, selection is very important with solar powered spot
lights. The main purpose of any spot
light... it has to be bright. Most solar powered
spot lights are lacking in this quality. So when you choose
your spot light, look for more LEDs and for reflective qualities
of the light’s cover.
Spot lights are usually sold in sets of 2, 3, 4 or more.
Some are connected by a wire and have only one solar cell collecting power.
This gives it the flexibility to be placed in a shady area with the collector in a sunny spot,
but they all have to be placed near each other depending on the length of the wire between each light.
We recommend stainless steel body lights for longevity of the light.

When it comes to solar
pathway lights that are built into a wooden
deck or your pathway pavement, this becomes a perfect application
for solar powered lights! This light is not meant
to illuminate, but to mark a path or to create an art piece out
of your patio, driveway or your garden.
These little guys turn
on automatically with darkness and will work with no fuss
for the next 2 years. The batteries will have to be replaced
as the quality of light starts failing after 2 years.

accent lights are not powerful enough to become
the main source of lighting at this stage in their development.
They do provide additional illumination and safety for your

that certain style and mood to your nocturnal landscape

String Lights have been a #1 hit
as a holiday lighting solution this year! There
are no real disadvantages to solar string lights
that we could find.
Holiday lights
are meant to provide a complementary inviting glow
for the holiday seasons – Christmas, Halloween and others...
or for your outdoor parties. And when you do not need
to connect your lights to an electric outlet, it becomes
an even more desirable object to have.
